MTV VMAs 2014

This year’s VMAs was underwhelming and disappointing to me. It needed a lot more BOOM and WOW factor.

MTV VMAs 2014 Staging
Ariana Granda opened the show with ‘Break Free’ which was a weak splash into the show, but into transitioned for the better with Nicki Minaj’s big bum and ‘Anaconda’, jiggling and slinking all up in your face, and woken up by Jessie’s powerful voice where she joined Ariana and Nicki to perform ‘Bang Bang’. That was a Banging way to start the show off. It could have been better (without Ariana’s start) but they sold me with the way they lined the performances together and melded them as one. Ariana and Jessie definitely liven up and get everyone jumping that you could barely realize Nicki was having a Wardrobe Malfunction! Her dress was opening up in the front, she was grabbing on to it. I thought it was the design of the dress all along, a cutout/slit! Haha. I really did not know that until I read it online, no wonder the cameras weren’t on her and she wasn’t shaking her treasures as much as she usually does!

Jessie JLoved Jessie J’s dress she had on for her opening act!

Taylor Swift performed ‘Shake It Off’ which was fun but I just really didn’t care for it. It is nothing spectacular to me but it was a pretty good performance in that glittery fringe/flapper outfit to keep the party going.

Sam Smith put his heart and soul into his emotional song ‘Stay With Me’. An impactful performance to tone down the loud, and bring the party back to the music.

Usher grooving to ‘She Came to Give It To You’ was one of my favourites of the night! I always love seeing actual dancing and choreography live on stage, and Usher is definitely bringing back his clean grooves which I absolutely love. And he also surprised us with playing a bass next to the bootylicious Nicki Minaj which was very cool. It was classy, hip and cool performance by Usher.

5 Seconds of Summer performed ‘Amnesia’, proofing that they are in a way different league than the One Direction boy-band category. I am honestly quite pissed that they didn’t win MTV’s Artist to Watch especially with this performance with so much emotion, very unexpected but awesome surprise. A good balance to the other banging and loud performance.

Rita Ora & Iggy Azalea definitely seduced me with ‘Black Widow’. It was easy but alluring and sexy in a more subtle way, but definitely a solid performance and collaboration. A very nice dynamic as well between Rita and Iggy on stage.

Sadly, Maroon 5’s performance of ‘Maps’ outside the Nokia Theatre fell flat among all the other performances and seeing how it was close to the closing performance by Beyonce. They should have added some twists to the performance to liven it up and make it fresh. I did not hate their performance but I was not drawn to keep watching either…

Last but not least, Beyonce closed the show with an almost 20minute long performance of her Entire Visual Album and acceptance of her MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The first half of the show was very burlesque and been-there-done-that to me. It was not fresh or attention grabbing… just her sexy dancing about (not the most inventive choreography, which really bore me). The second half of her performance, starting with Flawless was what impressed me. It was very directional and inspiring, she also brought it close to home by closing it with her song ‘Blue’ about her daughter. It was smart to bring it from sexy to heart warming which of course gained standing ovation. Jay-Z with their Daughter in one hand and the Vanguard Award on the other, got on stage to present it to her. I must say, it was pretty strong performance as a Honorary Vanguard Award Recipient. I still think JT’s performance last year had more surprises, entertainment and show quality to it (IMO, but I may be strongly biased here!).

Overall, I was quite underwhelmed by this year’s performance but I really loved how MTV chose to showcase more of the newer and upcoming artists such as Sam Smith, 5SoS, Iggy and Ariana. It is not as spectacular or special in show quality and entertainment, but we got some great live performances and music from this year’s MTV VMAs.

MTV VMAs 2014
Below are the winners of each category who walked home with a Moonman for this year (Under each category as also my comments on thoughts about the winner):

Check out my Predictions Post here:

Video of the Year
Beyoncé ft. JAY Z – “Drunk In Love”
Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX – “Fancy”
Pharrell Williams – “Happy”
Sia – “Chandelier”
Miley Cyrus – “Wrecking Ball”
=As much as I do not like Miley, I must say, at least Beyonce did not win with Drunk In Love. I say Sia or Iggy deserved to win more, but Wrecking Ball was a pretty good and conterversial music video.

Best Male
Ed Sheeran ft. Pharrell – “Sing”
Pharrell Williams – “Happy”
John Legend – “All Of Me”
Sam Smith – “Stay With Me”
Eminem ft. Rihanna – “Monster”
=A well deserved win for Ed for an unexpected direction in Music Video from Ed Sheeran!

Best Female
Katy Perry ft. Juicy J – “Dark Horse”
Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX – “Fancy”
Beyoncé – “Partition”
Lorde – “Royals”
Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea – “Problem”
=I really thought Iggy would have won with Fancy! Dark Horse is just a bit too gimmicky and very Junior to me… Do not appreciate it but I suppose it’s fantasy and dramatic

Best Hip Hop
Eminem – “Bezerk”
Drake ft. Majid Jordan – “Hold On (We’re Going Home)”
Childish Gambino – “3005”
Kanye West – “Black Skinhead”
Wiz Khalifa – “We Dem Boyz”
=A very R&B short-film music video which won. I was rooting for Black Skinhead but Drake’s Music Video is pretty tight too.

Best Pop
Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX – “Fancy”
Pharrell Williams – “Happy”
Jason Derulo ft. 2 Chainz – “Talk Dirty”
Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea – “Problem”
Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc – “Wake Me Up”
=COME ON. Problem won over Fancy? I’m pretty pissed at this. Problem is just such a generic pop song and music video, fancy has much more flair and pop to it.

Best Rock
Linkin Park – “Until It’s Gone”
Imagine Dragons – “Demons”
Arctic Monkeys – “Do I Wanna Know”
The Black Keys – “Fever”
Lorde – “Royals”
=I am flabbergasted. I mean, I do not hate the music video but is Royal even “ROCK”? …

Best New Artist (a.k.a MTV Artist to Watch)
Charli XCX – “Boom Clap”
Sam Smith – “Stay With Me”
5 Seconds of Summer -“She Looks So Perfect”
Schoolboy Q – “Man Of The Year”
Fifth Harmony – “Miss Movin On”
=Again, I have nothing against Fifth Harmony but I think Sam Smith/5 Seconds of Summer has much more potential and has much more going on than Fifth Harmony. Would have much preferred 5SoS taking this moonman.

The winners in these categories were announced after the broadcast:

Best Video With a Social Message
Beyoncé – “Pretty Hurts”
Angel Haze ft. SIA – “Battle Cry“
Avicii – “Hey Brother”
J. Cole ft. TLC – “Crooked Smile”
Kelly Rowland – “Dirty Laundry”
David Guetta ft. Mikky Ekko – “One Voice”
=I did not think it has the best story/interpretation in sending a social message out of all the nominations… but a pretty good music video. I suppose being the recipient of this year’s Video Vanguard Award, they needed her to take home at least one other moonman… weak.

Best Collaboration
Eminem ft. Rihanna – “Monster”
Beyoncé ft. JAY Z – “Drunk In Love”
Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea – “Problem”
Pitbull ft. Ke$ha – “Timber”
Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne and Tyga – “Loyal”
Katy Perry ft. Juicy J – “Dark Horse”
=Again, REALLY? The video of her rolling in the sand on the beach while Jay-Z shows up for like 5 seconds to rap? What Collaboration?

MTV Clubland Award
Zedd ft. Hayley Williams – “Stay the Night”
DJ Snake & Lil Jon – “Turn Down For What”
Calvin Harris – “Summer”
Martin Garrix – “Animal”
Disclosure – “Grab Her!”
=All very solid music videos and songs but YAY for Hayley Williams and the fantastic Music Video

Best Cinematography
30 Seconds to Mars – “City of Angels”
Beyoncé – “Pretty Hurts”
Arcade Fire – “Afterlife”
Gesaffelstein – “Hate or Glory”
Lana Del Rey – “West Coast”
=I was rooting for City of Angels but ah well, I do not know what constitutes as good cinematography

Best Choreography
Sia – “Chandelier”
Beyoncé – “Partition”
Usher – “Good Kisser”
Michael Jackson ft. Justin Timberlake – “Love Never Felt So Good”
Jason Derulo ft. 2Chainz – “Talk Dirty”
KIESZA – “Hideaway”
=I was quite surprised with this win but definitely well deserved with the expressive contemporary ballet choreography in this music video.

Best Editing
Eminem – “Rap God”
MGMT – “Your Life is a Lie”
Zedd ft. Hayley Williams -“Stay the Night”
Beyoncé – “Pretty Hurts”
Fitz and The Tantrums – “The Walker”
=Uhm, Okay.

Best Direction
OK Go – “The Writing’s On the Wall”
DJ Snake & Lil Jon – “Turn Down For What”
Miley Cyrus – “Wrecking Ball”
Beyoncé – “Pretty Hurts”
Eminem ft. Rihanna – “The Monster”
=I bet that crazy music video took a lot of directing!

Best Art Direction
Arcade Fire – “Reflektor”
DJ Snake & Lil Jon – “Turn Down For What”
Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX – “Fancy”
Eminem – “Rap God”
Tyler, The Creator – “Tamale”
=Did not really care for the music video, too pretentious IMO. Perhaps I need to waste more time and watch it a few more times to GET it.

Best Visual Effects
DJ Snake & Lil Jon – “Turn Down For What”
OK Go – “The Writing’s On the Wall”
Disclosure – “Grab Her!”
Eminem – “Rap God”
Jack White – “Lazaretto”
=I’m SO GLAD this smashing Music Video at least won one category! It seems like much thought and work was put into it, the result was perfection.
