HELLO (AGAIN) WORDPRESS: Summer in Present 2015

Blogging101, Day 1:

So, I’ve recently signed up for blogging101… which first task is to publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post, introducing myself to the blogosphere. MAN, if you know me, this is not going to be easy for me… to be straight to the point without being overly repetitive…

I will be introducing myself, a bit of background information as well as addressing some of the helpful prompters by blogging101 about my blog and blogging style in general.

What is blogging101?

“Blogging 101 is three weeks of bite-size blogging assignments that take you from “Blog?” to “Blog!” Every weekday, you’ll get a new assignment to help you publish a post, customize your blog, or engage with the community.”

This little course could not happen at a worse time… as I am at the end of my one-year placement (an internship which is tied into my University degree), July is the time where I have tons to wrap up in order to pass down to the next placement student. I also have a presentation to prepare for my university’s tutor who will be grading it… as well as a final report! NOT TO MENTION, I REALLY have to finalize my plans (accommodation, transportation etc.) for my Europe trip with my mum in September. STILL, I will try my best to stick to this course. Hopefully it’ll make me a more consistent blogger after!

Who Am I?

I’ve adopted the blogger name – Summer (Sum for short) ever since I’ve started my blog. Perhaps I’ll shed some light on why I chosen Summer in a later post 😉 My real name? Let’s say I prefer having some anonymity for security reasons.

Nice to meet you all!

I am a Malaysian-Chinese girl from a vibrant island called Penang, in her early twenties, and now reside in United Kingdom (since 2012) for my tertiary education.

I am an international student in United Kingdom, pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Currently, I am based in Cambridge working on a one-year engineering placement as a research assistant . My placement ends at the end of this August and I would be off to resume my final year of my undergraduate course.

how did I get into blogging?

Although I am an engineering student (the more practical choice esp to Asian parents), I have always been more drawn to all things creative – arts, fashion, photography, videography and much more. My initial aim of blogging was to share my creative side, in hopes of motivating me to broaden my creative work and possibly engage with the creative community to gain feedback and more.

Why did I choose to have a blogger name? Well, I set up my blog when the blogging hype first came up – I was in high school at the time (circa year 2008). Almost anyone cool in school would have a blog, however most of their blogging content really is just a long form Facebook update! Whether they were partying, eating good food, fan-girling over celebrities… that was pretty much it. Viewers of their blogs were really just friends and peers. I wanted to steer clear of that. I never even promoted my blog to my friends or such… I wanted to blog about things that would touch others, relatable issues… not an embellished version of my life to instill envy.  I wanted to connect with people who weren’t my peers who would not sweeten their criticism and that would comment truthfully. I also wanted to broaden and share my creative work (as mentioned above). Perhaps to some degree, I did not want my peers to know the real me until I knew who that was. I always felt like I’ve unconsciously suppressed parts of me with other people. I thought blogging would be a nice little sanctuary for me to truly be me without the pressure of conforming my thoughts to my peers.

My Blogging History

I created my blog on WordPress as oppose to the popular choice for teens at the time –Blogspot– because it felt like more professional with a community of more serious bloggers.

I started off blogging with mainstream content – parts of my menial teenage social life and such, slowly seeping in some posts on my photography, restaurant reviews and my fashion styles.

Most recently, I have been blogging about TV shows, Music and Movies. This is because in the late days of my adolescent, I was somehow drawn into the world of TV shows – really, I watch too many TV shows for my own good. I thought it would be nice to blog about episodes of TV shows which I felt had content worth discussing (mainly about relatable feelings and situations). In an attempt to rediscover my love for fashion, I also did blogged about the styles and fashion on these TV shows. I also had an in-depth recap/review on Project Runway works on every episode (which I unfortunately stopped before the season finale as I started my engineering placement! KICKING MYSELF.).

Right now, I blog really about anything: Man Crush Mondays, Woman Crush Wednesdays, travels, food reviews etc.

It really does not look like I’ve accomplished much of anything I set out to when I first started blogging… but it is still nice to be able to look back at my thoughts and moments from the past to reminiscent and see how much I’ve changed (or not).

Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?

SM/JT | 50/50As I’ve previously mentioned, I want to take my creative work (whether it is arts, craft, photography… I am still finding my calling) seriously and possibly turn it full time. I felt blogging is a good platform to share with people of that community which I could discuss and gain valuable comments and insight from.

I’m also interested in sharing my honest and detailed reviews on restaurants, music and such which might seem insignificant (with various sites dedicated to this purpose such as trip advisor) but I personally feel it would be still helpful for people who prefer more detailed reviews (as I).

Besides that, I have recently been through some of my own personal struggles (mentally and emotionally) which I would like to share to hopefully help others who are in similar predicaments.

What topics do you think you’ll write about?

As much as I know a blog with more focused content is likely to be more successful… I am going to write about what I want to write.

I was at the lowest point of my life and lost myself in that downfall. As cliché as this sounds, my blogging journey will be my journey of self-discovery, to be whole and sure of myself again .

To really narrow down topics I think I’ll write about:

  • Travels
  • Uplifting and Optimistic Words
  • Thoughts/Questions about Life and such bigger issues
  • My Personal Experiences/Predicaments
  • Self-Help
  • Food Recipes and Reviews
  • TV, Music and Movie Reviews
  • Health and Fitness
  • Fashion and Style
  • Arts (and craft)
  • Photography

Does that help? As I say, I am on a path of rediscovery, so… my blog content will certainly reflect that. As much as it seems like a lifestyle blog, I would like to be a more… down to earth one which shares with you the good, the bad and the ugly.

Who would you love to connect with via your blog?

Anyone and everyone!

Really! Since I’ll be blogging about an array of my interests (Music, TV, arts, fashion etc.) and my personal experiences, I hope to meet and engage with people of those interests AND people who relate to my personal stories.

If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?
  • To have gained a fair amount of viewership
  • Bring together a community of similar interest who openly discuss and comment on my posts
  • Engaged with other bloggers (and possibly make new friends!)
  • Helped someone (ONE is all I ask!) from any of my post (reviews and especially posts about my personal experiences!)
  • Be content
  • Evolved in my thinking and writing
  • Improved my writing skills especially how to be concise on expressing my thoughts without being long-winded
  • Find my calling, what I am truly passionate for
  • Be driven by my new found passion

There you go! I think I did a pretty good job of not going off track here (which I often do)!

I hope this post helped you understand me better as a blogger and that you’ve found a reason to keep reading my blog from here on! My many facets should fascinate you rather than confuse/intimidate, I’m hoping!

*Comments are much appreciated! Whether you’re a fellow blogger on the blogging101 course or not! 😉

Resurrection,
Sum.

    • Thanks! Naaah, not really! You have no idea how long it takes for me to just write and edit a single blog post! So thank you for liking my content =) It means a lot and I hope you’ve gained something from it. I’ve been blogging on and off since 2010 I would say, but I’ve only started being more regular in 2015. I’m definitely trying my best to be consistent and frequent with my postings! I hope you will be visiting often! 😉 xx

  2. I was reading your blog and suddenly realized that Jajaja some of your motivations are very similar to mine! I am an Industrial Engineer (had several mechanical courses too) but that does not mean that we want to be all day working on that! we have the lot of creativity and passions!!!
I liked your intro, would recommend though doing posts a little shorter in a way that you can read it all in one visit. Look forward to see more posts!

    • Industrial Engineer! Yes, I have recently been looking into pursuing that as a Masters… but I’m a bit hesitant as I am afraid of finding out that I do not like that afterall either… So, I’m trying things on my own here and there in hopes of finding my passion.
Is it really that long? Hmmm, I just have trouble being more concise when it comes to expressing myself… hope I’ll get better at that! That’s why I add photos in hopes of it breaking up the words, an illusion that it isn’t that wordy ahah. Hope you stick around and thanks for stopping by!

  3. Hi Sum, you really made my day with your comment. Reading your post made me feel that it will be very nice to “walk together”. I like that you have many different interests and I love your writing style. I still struggle to express myself well in English but I hope that staying in the UK for a while will improve that. In short: You sound like a nice and interesting person and I look forward to read your future posts 🙂 and it would be cool if we could give each other feedback about our creative projects e.g. Photography and so on. Have an awesome evening, Romica

    • Thank you for dropping by 😉 Where are you originally from then? Just speak and read more English but from your blog post, your English seems fine to me!
That would be great! As I am still caught up with my Engineering work, it has been a struggle trying to find time for my creative projects… my first step is to start from the basics – sketching, which you seem to be doing a lot! I hope I would be able to finally find my footing and post some of my art work for feedback too! Good luck and Happy Blogging! xx

      • I’m from Austria, so I speak German 🙂 I should sketch more but have become a bit lazy lately. I work part time in a cinema, which allows me to do the chalk signs so I’ve done more lettering recently. Yeah, Let’s keep in touch 🙂 read you soon

        • That’s very awesome of you to still try to instill some creative work even in your part time job! Laziness, I know that feeling all too well. Yes, let’s 😉 Looking forward to your art work! Do share your lettering xx

    • Ahhh, I am in Cambridge, UK now… with the summer heat here, I am definitely envious that you’re floating by Tioman Islands with the cool sea breeze and waters! Definitely check out Penang (born and raised!) if you have a chance! It’s a charming town not to be missed! 😉 Pleasure is all mine! xx

  5. LOL! Sounds just like me; taking on something new and challenging even though I already have other things going on. I am doing another E-course while taking blogging101, and I just went back to work as a WAHM and of course there’s my kids; 4 of them! I love ☆Malaysian people☆. I have been to Tioman Island. So beautiful. I am very blessed to have one Auntie and two friends, 1 of them very dear to me, who are Malaysian. Glad to have made a connection with you already. 🙂

It sure is a small world isn’t it! I was born and raised on a lovely island called Penang, you should definitely visit if you have the chance 😉
A pleasure on my part too xx

  7. When you wrote, “I am on a path of rediscovery,” I thought that this was very apt for a personal blog such as this, and that’s a journey people are usually afraid to take. I didn’t mind the length at all because the post as a whole is interesting, and the narrative moved very naturally between paragraphs.

I remember when I, too, was in university. It was a terribly frantic time as well, especially towards the end of my program. I hope that you use blogging as a means to re-collect yourself after a long day of running about and “scattering” yourself.

I look forward to more posts. Blessings. 🙂

  9. That was a very comprehensive post! I think it’s wonderful that you’re using your blog as a creative outlet. I know that you have a lot coming up on your schedule, but hopefully you’ll have time to explore the many topics on your list. You express yourself so well & I’m looking forward to hearing more from you. Thanks for checking out my blog!

  11. Hi!
What a thorough post! You’ve definitely thought things through and know what your blogging goals are!
I just have a small suggestion regarding your blog layout. On desktop, I’m noticing that your pages and title are in a gray font and seem hard to read/see, as well as your post tags. I don’t know if you can change the font colour or perhaps the background colour to contrast the words, but it’d make the reader’s experience better. But again, just a small suggestion that you can totally ignore if you want too!
    Happy Blogging! 🙂

    • Thanks! Well, I know my goals, but there are kinks to work out… I guess figuring that out is part of the blogging journey?

That’s a great suggestion! I have really been meaning to change my blog appearance for some time now (possibly the theme!) but haven’t found the time to really go at it. I will definitely take your advice to heart, really appreciate it! 😉

*I am quite confused about post tags and feel like I’m doing them wrong (tagging too much) if have any advice on this.

      Like

      • Tags are just keywords to sort a post by. They’re useful for finding a post on your blog and for your blog to be found on WordPress and Google and whatnot.
If you wrote a post on a book, for example, you’d tag the book title, the author, maybe the series (if it’s a part of a series), the word book, and maybe a theme you talked about in your post. There shouldn’t be more than 15 tags but that’s not a set rule and sometimes more are totally needed.
        Hope that helps!

        Like

        • I definitely added much more tags then necessary for previous posts in the hopes that I would get more views… I suppose I should only tag as necessary! Thanks, that helped!

  12. Hi Sum, great post! I’m so excited to read that you and I are writing about similar things and have a lot of similar interests! I also love fashion (I try to do weekly Fashion Friday posts), fitness, food, and pretty much everything you listed in your post…and I did a Study Abroad in England for a semester, in Southampton. Looking forward to reading your future posts!

So glad you reached out on my first blogging 101 post :D! We’re literally so similar! You basically put into words what I couldn’t with this post. The reason you blog, how you do it, etc.! Can’t wait to read more about your life :)!

  14. Hi Sum,

It’s great to meet you. When I first read your list of topics you want to cover in this blog, I thought “whoa, that’s a lot!” But then your comment about this being a sort of lifestyle blog made something click. A lifestyle blog goes from topic to topic, but is tied together by the writer’s personality. I think you’re on a good track to have a blog where you offer your unique take on everything from TV to travel to self-help and beyond. The key will be to put your personal stamp (or “brand” even though that may sound tacky) on everything you write.

Hope Blogging 101 will inspire you creatively. Just looking at your recent posts, I can tell we have some TV interests in common. 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I know. I feel like a lifestyle blog would be such a cliche… but I guess I shouldn’t worry about that for now as I’m still finding myself (as a blogger as well!) Yes, I have been blogging a fair amount on TV but it is rather disheartening to not have any comments which was really the point for me – to encourage discussion and sharing!

Perhaps after blogging for a while, I might focus on a certain topic, which seems to be the more successful route for most blogs, yes?

Anyhow, that is good advice – putting my personal stamp. Let’s hope I’ll figure out my “brand” soon enough! And thank you for your encouraging words! 😉 Hope you drop by again soon! xx

      Like

      • There’s no rush. Since you’re still finding yourself as a blogger, the more you write you might find yourself drawn to certain topics. It’s true that many successful blogs are around a certain topic/a few related ones, but some are a little bit of everything.

The whole personal brand thing takes awhile too, and I feel like it can change over time because, well, we’re *people.* I don’t have all that figured out yet either…

Glad to be of some help! xx

        • Good to know I’m not the only one still figure things out 😉 Yes, we are only human, we learn, experience, grow and change. As long as we’re happy, change is not always a bad thing.
