Behind the Blog: Hums of Sum

My Sanctuary

It really took me a while to come up with a blog title that I was satisfied with.

Initially, my blog title (and url) was sumawesomeness. It was created when I was obviously a teenager who liked to think that I was DA BOMB. I was REALLY into the word – Awesomeness, and felt like I was all that. Looking back, it really just sounds like I was full of myself when I was remotely a good blogger (nor a consistent one at that).

As I said, it took me a while to come up with ‘Hums of Sum’. I wanted to have my blogger name – Summer – in the blog title of course. How did I come up with Hums of Sum? Oddly, I started googling for what rhymed with Sum and Summer. Hums of Sum rhymes, sounds pleasant and is fairly catchy & easy to remember (in hopes of people remembering my menial blog’s name), yes? Being a typically insecure and shy person, I rarely voice myself in a transparent manner. I speak only filtered thoughts (unless you get me tipsy enough to care less). So there, Hums… amusingly accurate.

What comes after…

A tagline. Maaan, a blog title was enough to have me racking my brain, a TAGLINE too?

Of course, I WANTED a witty, smart and unique tagline (who doesn’t). For me, the tagline should be what the readers would expect from me, it should encapsulate who I am/want to be as a blogger. Perhaps from my many thoughts, I did have one… but my mind works at mysterious times – my best ideas come to me at the most inconvenient times. These times are mostly when I’m showering, in an exam… basically any time or place where I had nothing to jot my ideas down. Pfft, I wish I could just file them away but my mind has a pretty shitty storage facility – I don’t have the best memory.

For the time being (and the sake of this blogging101 task), allow me to settle with this:

“You don’t have to understand here to be here.”

It’s a zen-ish thing.

I have always loved philosophical sayings/quotes that really make you think. Recently, I’ve been rewatching NBC’s Life which unfortunately had a short life span of 2 seasons. The main character, Charlie Crews, would spew such mind boggling one-liners which is part of his Zen teachings. I would highly recommend this show (especially if you are a Damien Lewis fan!), the dialogues really makes you think… and it has comical moments too.

*Unfortunately, the theme I’m currently using does not support taglines… This calls for a re-vamp of my blog! So, stick around and give me some feedback when that happens!

“You don’t have to understand here to be here.”

Sometimes, you might not understand it here at the moment, but you have to experience it as part of the journey to appreciate it later when here becomes where you were.

So, this is an open invitation to anyone and everyone (to you!) on my journey of finding self- contentment and happiness by simply being me. You may not relate to it all, some of my interests may not be yours, but I still hope you are here to stay to give me your take on things.

Simply here,
Sum.

    • Why thank you 😉 I don’t think I have a favorite post just yet as I’m still figuring out my blogging style and main intentions… but I would say that I my first post for blogging101 is probably the most personal one I’ve published. Hope you stick around to check out my other content! 😉

    • Thanks 😉 I wouldn’t call myself a photographer, but I do snap quite a lot of everything and anything, so I have quite a lot to choose from for the time being!
Some of my Google-ed photos however… first thing, definitely look for photos of good resolution. Other than that, I sometimes try to edit photos I found on Google so that it makes sense (how it ties in to the content of my post), either by the photo appearance or adding typography (as the one I did in this post). Hope that helps!

  1. I love your blog design, I think it works really well with your style. You have made it work. You dont necessarily have to have a tagline under your blog title. I don’t. Well I do, but I dont. I created a header which I put text on to show my blog title and tagline so you could do this to avoid changing your whole theme. 🙂 x

    • Thank you! I do like how clean and minimal it is, it also forces me to have at least a photo to each post! Still, I think it would be nice if my homepage would display excerpts of my blog posts too.
Thanks for the suggestion on creating a header too! I have been meaning to create one but it has been difficult to choose on a single header picture that represents me.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you keep coming back 😉 xx

  2. I think, “You don’t have to understand here to be here,” fits nicely with what you said about rediscovery in your previous post. I like it, and I think I understand what it means. In life, sometimes we need to simply power through experiences when they happen. Reflecting on these after gives them meaning.

    • That’s exactly what the tagline means to me! I’m ecstatic that you can relate to a short one-liner and I hope my future content will be too 😉 Thanks for sticking around xx
